"The Voyage of Ulysses"

Design-Build Project

Fountain, Plaza, Art Work Restoration

DCM was hired to revitalize the plumbing system for a Philadelphia fountain dedicated in 1977. Maintenance issues had significantly decreased flow through the system’s jets, turning a once lively public fountain into another lack luster public water feature. DCM’s engineer’s brought new life to the fountain by designing an innovative high-to-low flow solids separator system requiring minimal maintenance. DCM ensured lasting value by rerouting pipe and relocating equipment to facilitate the most effective performance. DCM’s multi-disciplinary designers added to the fountain’s aesthetic and performance. The system’s main jets are integrated into a 16’ tall stainless steel sculpture expressing the voyage of the Greek hero Ulysses. 10 new low-flow perimeter jets keep basin water moving to prevent bacterial growth; that number was chosen to represent the number of years Ulysses spent sailing home from the Trojan War. DCM’s engineers utilized non-chemical water treatment to promote sustainable water treatment, and DCM’s construction team completed the renovations in an occupied parking garage without disruption to the space’s every day function.
